What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a Japanese martial art that is great for self-defence and confidence. It uses combinations of blocks, strikes, locks, and throws to provide practical defences against real-life situations.
Is this Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
No. Jiu Jitsu has entered mainstream awareness in recent years primarily through promotion of Gracie, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, which is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Our style, Japanese Jiu Jitsu, is focused on self defence from a variety of dangerous situations, such as attacks from punches, kicks, strangles and grabs, and from weapons such as bottles, sticks, and knives.
How much does it cost?
Each club will set its own rates (often called “mat fees”) depending on their costs for running the club. All of our clubs (and parent bodies) are not-for-profit, all instructors are volunteers and take no payment. Fees charged are kept to a minimum required to cover venue hire, equipment hire, insurance, etc..
Most clubs will offer a number of free trial sessions.
You will also need to purchase a membership from the parent organisation, either The Jitsu Foundation or The Aiuchi Jiu Jitsu Association, so that you are insured to train. Both organisations offer a no-obligation free trial period.

Do I need special clothing? What should I wear?
For your first few sessions you can wear track suit bottoms and a long-sleeve t-shirt. If you decide to continue training, then you will need a training suit, called a gi. It is usually cheaper to buy one from the club.
Please also bring a pair of flip-flops or sandals for when you are not on the mat.
What age?
The University clubs are adult-only.
The non-University clubs (Cardiff, St Athan, Vale) are for children and adults. Typically 6+ but check with your specific club if you have a younger child who is interested.
Is it full contact?
Yes and no.
We train together, so there is contact. But we train cooperatively, not competitively. One person (or persons!) will play the role of attacker, the other defends and practices a technique which the instructor will have just demonstrated. Roles then swap, and it is the other person’s turn to have a go.
At various times (especially in gradings) you will be put under pressure in order to test your abilities in ‘real life’ scenarios (while still ensuring everyone’s safety).
How do I get started?
You are advised to contact your chosen club to make sure they are training on the date you intend to start – contact details are on each club’s page on this website.
Fill out an online application form for a license in advance to save some time.
Put on some loose / gym clothing.
Bring a water bottle.
Turn up and give it a go!
