Your first session
Come along to one of our scheduled sessions, ideally 10 minutes early. There is no need to book in advance.
We recommend joining the Cardiff Jiu Jitsu enquiries WhatsApp group before you come, where you can ask any questions.
Arriving at the dojo
When you enter the building, turn right at reception and go up the stairs, following the signs for the Judo Dojo.
Bring a water bottle, or buy a refillable one from reception for about £2.
Costs and trial sessions
The club is not-for-profit and all instructors are volunteers. Your first two weeks are free. After that, the club subscription is £15/month and covers both the Wednesday and Saturday sessions. Discounts are available for multiple family members. You will also need a licence from our parent body, The Jiu Jitsu Foundation, which costs £38/year for adults and £24/year for juniors. There is no upfront payment during the first two weeks.
What should I wear?
For your first few sessions, wear tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt. If you decide to continue, you will need a training suit, called a gi, which is usually cheaper to buy through the club. Please also bring flip-flops or sandals for when you are not on the mat.
Who can attend?
Children aged 6+ and adults are welcome. We have a large dojo and multiple instructors, so junior and adult sessions run side by side. You can learn Jiu Jitsu at the same time as your children.
What does training feel like?
Training involves contact, but it is cooperative rather than competitive. One person, or sometimes several people, plays the attacker while the other practises a technique demonstrated by the instructor, then you swap roles. At times, especially in gradings, you will work under pressure to test your abilities in realistic scenarios while keeping everyone safe.
